Laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection is a minimally invasive surgery for recurrent or treatment-resistant anal cancer. This procedure removes the anus, rectum, and part of the colon, requiring a permanent colostomy for waste elimination through a bag attached to the body (stoma).

In cases of smaller, localized tumours, a local resection may be performed to remove the tumour along with some surrounding healthy tissue, often preserving sphincter function for bowel control. For more advanced cases, a standard abdominoperineal resection may be necessary, removing lymph nodes if involved and creating a permanent colostomy.
