November marks Gastric Cancer Awareness Month and World Pancreatic Cancer Day on 17 November 2022.
Together with MEP Cristian-Silviu Buşoi, United European Gastroenterology (UEG), Pancreatic Cancer Europe (PCE), and Digestive Cancers Europe (DiCE) thank all the speakers and participants who attended the European Parliament policy event on the neglected heavy burden – pancreatic and gastric cancers.
These two cancers seem to be the forgotten cancers regarding screening and early detection.
Pancreatic cancer is the deadliest and has the lowest survival rate among all cancers across Europe. When diagnosed, 80% of patients have tumours that are diagnosed too late to be cured. The 5-year survival rate for pancreatic cancer is 9%.
Each year in Europe, around 136.000 people are diagnosed with gastric cancer, while approximately 97.000 patients die.
