Appendiceal Cancer Risk Factors & Prevention

Prevention and screening

There is not known way to prevent the appendiceal cancer. Except living a healthy lifestyle to reduce the influenceable risk factors which might lead to the appendiceal cancer. This could be:

  • Avoiding tobacco smoke
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Regular physical activity
  • Consuming healthy diet

There is neither a standardised screening process nor a specific test for diagnosing appendiceal cancer. What makes it even more challenging is that appendiceal cancer is difficult to diagnose due to its unusual and non-specific symptoms (Kayumov et al., 2022, p. 79).

In most of the cases, appendiceal cancer is discovered by accidentally. It is often discovered during treatment of completely different conditions, and in most of the cases during the removal of appendix affected by appendicitis. Colonoscopy may identify the appendiceal orifice and allow for increased recognition of tumours of appendix origin (Kayumov et al., 2022, p. 79).
