Reflecting on ECCAM 2026: C.O.M.P.A.S. Association Helped Bring Colorectal Cancer Awareness to Thousands Across Romania
As we look back on European Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month (ECCAM) 2026, one of the campaign’s strongest national contributions came from Romania, where the C.O.M.P.A.S. Association successfully mobilised communities, volunteers, patient navigators, and media partners to raise awareness about colorectal cancer prevention and early detection.
Through a combination of public engagement activities, educational outreach, and media advocacy, the campaign reinforced an important message: colorectal cancer is often preventable and highly treatable when detected early.
Bringing Prevention into the Community
During ECCAM 2026, volunteers from NaviCare, Romania’s largest free patient navigation programme supported by the Metropolis Foundation, took colorectal cancer awareness directly to the public through a series of street activations across Bucharest.
The initiative engaged people of all ages in conversations about prevention, screening, and recognising the importance of timely diagnosis. Families, young adults, and older people received practical information on reducing their risk of colorectal cancer and the benefits of participating in screening programmes.
“As patient navigators, we witness every day the devastating impact of late cancer diagnoses on patients and their families. Colorectal cancer, however, can be prevented. Through the ECCAM initiative, we wanted to remind people that prevention and screening are essential. When detected early, colorectal cancer is highly treatable and manageable,” said Andi Cârlan, President of the C.O.M.P.A.S. Association.
Extending the Reach Beyond the Streets
The campaign’s impact extended well beyond face-to-face activities. Across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, C.O.M.P.A.S. shared educational resources, patient stories, and prevention messages, reaching more than 100,000 people.
The awareness efforts also attracted significant media attention. A campaign press release was featured by AGERPRES, Romania’s national news agency, as well as leading medical publications, including 360medical.ro, Viața Medicală, and MedicalManager.ro. Through extensive republication by national and regional media outlets, the campaign message reached audiences across the country.
Why Continued Awareness Matters
Although ECCAM takes place each March, the need for awareness remains year-round. Colorectal cancer continues to be one of Romania’s most significant cancer challenges, with more than 13,000 new cases diagnosed annually and mortality rates remaining above the European Union average.
At the same time, it is one of the most preventable cancers. Early detection can dramatically improve outcomes, with survival rates reaching up to 90% when the disease is diagnosed at an early stage.
Patient Navigators Driving Change
The work of the C.O.M.P.A.S. Association demonstrates the vital role patient organisations play in improving cancer awareness and supporting people throughout their healthcare journey. By combining education, advocacy, patient navigation, and collaboration with healthcare partners, the organisation continues to help ensure that more people receive the information and support they need to seek care earlier and achieve better outcomes.
As ECCAM 2026 concludes, the Romanian campaign stands as a powerful example of how local action can contribute to a wider European movement to reduce the burden of colorectal cancer.
