Liver transplantation offers new hope for patients with liver cancer. DiCE has played a key role in shaping the most recent recommendations, which are now accessible online.

On the 28th of February, the paper summarising the newest scientific recommendations for liver transplantations for the two major forms of liver cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) has been published with the title “The 2024 ILTS-ILCA consensus recommendations for liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma”.

This paper is based on the statements provided by a diverse, multidisciplinary group of participants during an international consensus conference convened by the International Liver Transplantation Society (ILTS) and the International Liver Cancer Association (ILCA) on 1-2 February 2024, in Valencia, Spain. DiCE also participated in this conference, representing the patient perspective and needs together with the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (CCF). Prior to the meeting, DiCE, Bluefaery and CCF drafted a set of key statements about the status quo and recommended next steps from the point of view of patients in the field of liver transplantation for the treatment of liver cancer.

The recently published paper includes up-to-date recommendations regarding the selection and management of patients with liver cancer being considered for liver transplantation. It reflects a general interest and willingness in the field to make liver transplantation accessible to more HCC and iCCA patients.
