On May 27, 2025, the Neolife Băneasa Clinic in Bucharest, Romania, hosted a significant event titled “Together for Life – The Fight Against Cancer,” organised by the Oncology Community of the Patients’ College. The gathering brought together over 50 participants, including patients, caregivers, oncologists, nutritionists, psychologists, and patient navigators, all united by a common goal: to enhance the quality of life for those affected by cancer and to explore how innovation, empathy, and partnership can strengthen patients during and after cancer treatment.

The event emphasised the theme “Innovation, Empathy, and Partnership in Oncology – An Informed Patient is a Strong Patient,” with discussions spanning multidisciplinary collaboration, genetic testing in the age of immunotherapy, personalised nutrition, and the importance of psychological support throughout the cancer journey. A key highlight was the focus on patient navigation, where Andi Cârlan – metastatic colorectal cancer survivor, Patient Navigator, and member of the Patient Advisory Committee at DiCE – alongside fellow navigator Elena Albu, spoke about the vital support navigators offer: helping patients understand their diagnosis, obtain second opinions, access cross-border treatment options, and manage the complexities of both public and private healthcare systems.

“Acknowledging fear, frustration, or anger isn’t weakness – it’s courage. There’s no shame in saying you need to talk to someone. Asking questions and seeking help is wisdom,” they shared, underlining the emotional intelligence often required from patients and caregivers alike.

The event also covered several other essential areas of cancer care. Dr. Bogdan Georgescu presented the benefits of weekly Tumor Boards at Neolife, where multidisciplinary teams create personalised treatment plans. The inclusion of immunotherapy in Romania’s public health system was discussed in connection with the growing importance of genetic testing. Dr. Răzvan Curcă addressed common misconceptions around radiotherapy, while nutritionist Elena Coșbuc offered practical guidance on personalised dietary strategies, highlighting the alarming rates of malnutrition among cancer patients.

Psychologist Mariana Dobrescu emphasised the need for mental health support throughout the cancer journey, not only for patients but also for their loved ones. In addition, Cristian C. Francu, ambassador of the Patients’ College, detailed critical patient rights such as free home care services and access to the MONITOR voucher for regular post-treatment investigations.

The event concluded with a call to action: join a community that informs, supports, and empowers. The Oncology Community of the Patients’ College continues to offer verified resources, advocacy opportunities, and peer support, reinforcing that no one should face cancer alone.
