IGET Celebrates Five Years of Advancing Gastrointestinal Cancer Care in Croatia
On 29 November 2025, the Institute for Gastroenterological Tumours (IGET), Zagreb, Croatia, will celebrate its fifth anniversary during Gastric Cancer Awareness Month. This symbolic occasion highlights IGET’s continued commitment to improving public understanding, early detection, and comprehensive care for patients affected by gastrointestinal malignancies.
To mark the event, IGET will host a special round table focused on survivorship and the quality of life of oncology patients. The discussion will bring together survivors, caregivers, psychologists, nutritionists, and healthcare professionals to explore holistic approaches to cancer care, emotional recovery, and long-term survivorship.
Founded in 2020 as a joint initiative of healthcare professionals and patients, IGET was established to foster dialogue on malignant diseases of the gastrointestinal system, emphasising that many of these cancers are curable when detected early. Over the past five years, the Institute has evolved into a multidisciplinary platform that connects medical expertise, psychosocial support, and public education. Its mission is to enhance the quality of healthcare services and the quality of life for patients through education, communication, and collaboration across the healthcare system.
IGET works closely with leading Croatian medical institutions, including the University Hospital Centre Sestre milosrdnice (University Hospital for Tumours) and the University Hospital Centre Zagreb, as well as the Croatian Institute of Public Health (HZJZ). International collaborations include Digestive Cancers Europe (DiCE), Global Colon Cancer Association, World Patients Association, Pancreatic Cancer Europe, My Gut Feeling, the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), and the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC). Together, these partners advocate for improved standards of care and better alignment of oncology systems with EU best practices.
