READI for Inclusion: Making Clinical Trials Fairer for All

Clinical studies are the backbone of medical progress — yet far too many people are excluded from participating. The READI Project is working to change that.

READI (Resilient Equitable Accessible and Diverse Inclusion) is a collaborative effort involving 73 organisations across 18 countries, backed by the Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) and industry partners. Its mission is to give every person, regardless of their background, a fair opportunity to participate in clinical research.

Individuals from underserved or underrepresented communities frequently encounter significant barriers to participation. These include a lack of information, mistrust of the system, poor communication, distance from trial sites, and experiences of bias or discrimination.

READI addresses these challenges by equipping patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and community groups with the necessary tools, training, and support to engage meaningfully in clinical trials.

At the first virtual General Assembly (4–5 June), consortium partners came together to reflect on progress and set the direction for the year ahead. Key outcomes included:

  • A project overview presented by Alberto M. Borobia (Project Coordinator) and Juliette Guillot (Project Lead)
  • Collaborative work in Workshop 1 to enhance clinical site capability
  • Communication strategies developed in Workshop 2
  • Vision-setting for local community clusters in Workshop 3
  • A review of progress on project milestones

DiCE, as part of the consortium, works on initiatives such as READI, which aim to close the gap in cancer care and research. Ensuring representation in clinical trials is crucial for delivering better and more equitable outcomes for all.
