Skating for Change: Turning ECCAM into Action on the Ice
On 7 March in Utrecht, the Netherlands, MDL Fonds, the Dutch Digestive Diseases Foundation, will host the second edition of its charity ice-skating challenge. The initiative brings people together on the ice to raise awareness and vital funds for colorectal cancer research.
Last year’s inaugural event raised more than €42,000. This year, organisers hope to double that impact, strengthening investment in research and innovation and improving patient outcomes.
Among the participants is Katell Maguet, a French colorectal cancer survivor living in the Netherlands, who returns to the ice to support progress in treatment and understanding of the disease.
Skating for research, together
When Katell first learned about the MDL Fonds challenge, she joined immediately. Skating alongside friends and colleagues last year, she experienced a strong sense of solidarity and shared purpose that left a lasting impression.
This year, she will skate again with an international group of supporters. For her, the event is both meaningful and accessible.
“Colorectal cancer is becoming more common in people under 50. This is why research matters. We need better treatments and a deeper understanding of why these numbers are rising. And it is also simply fun. You do not need to be an expert skater. Even one lap makes a difference. Together, we can raise funds for a better future.”
