Walking with Purpose: PALEMA Marks 10 Years with Camino Pilgrimage for Cancer Awareness

To mark its 10th anniversary, the Swedish cancer organisation PALEMA undertook a remarkable journey to raise awareness of digestive cancers—some of the most under-recognised forms of the disease. A group of survivors, relatives, and members walked the Camino de Santiago, following the coastal route from Porto to Santiago de Compostela between 25 April and 10 May 2025.
The 14-day pilgrimage was both a physical challenge and a symbol of strength, unity, and hope. It highlighted the role of physical activity in recovery and well-being after a cancer diagnosis, and celebrated PALEMA’s ongoing mission to give a voice to patients.
PALEMA’s president, Eva Backman—herself a pancreatic cancer survivor—was among the walkers. “This time I feel like I’m not just carrying my own hope – but our common hope,” she said. After completing the Camino alone 10 years ago during her recovery, she now returns with a shared purpose.
For many, the Camino became an emotional journey as well as a physical one. It was a chance to reflect, build resilience, and honour those who can no longer take part. “We want to show that our diagnoses exist and that our voices count. Every step should be towards a change,” Eva added.
