Is There Such a Thing as a Perfect Day?
How Harry’s Tegenkracht brought 65 people together in Valkenburg for oesophageal cancer research
Does a perfect day truly exist? My answer is a resounding yes.
On 5 June 2026, we hosted the official Harry’s Tegenkracht (Harry’s Counterforce) event. After months of preparation that began in January, 65 incredible people came together to cycle and walk through the beautiful hills of Valkenburg: 21 cyclists and 44 walkers. Each participant has played a unique role in my life’s journey.
Many of them had never met before, yet they all shared one important connection: me.
The day was about far more than completing a sporting challenge. While the rolling hills of Valkenburg certainly tested everyone’s endurance, the event was ultimately defined by the meaningful conversations, new friendships, and genuine sense of community that developed along the way.
The cycling route itself was no small feat. Having completed just one 35 km training ride the previous Sunday, taking on a 58 km course with 755 metres of elevation gain was a significant challenge. Crossing the finish line made every climb worthwhile.
One of the day’s most memorable moments was presenting our preliminary fundraising cheque to researchers from the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (AvL) Foundation. Johanna van Sandick and Liudmila Kodach travelled to Valkenburg to accept the cheque on behalf of the oesophageal cancer research team.
Thanks to the dedication of our 65 participants and the generosity of more than 600 donors, we have raised an incredible €25,126 so far.
Our work, however, is far from over. Continued investment in research is essential to improve outcomes and move closer to the day when oesophageal cancer can become a chronic, manageable disease.
Looking Ahead to 2027
I remain deeply moved by the impact that Harry’s Tegenkracht has created. What began as a simple idea in January became a truly unforgettable day on 5 June 2026. I am still reflecting on the many special moments we shared together.
The good news is that we are doing it all again.
Harry’s Tegenkracht 2027 will take place on 4 June 2027.
