The 11th Digestive Cancers Europe (DiCE) Masterclass, held in Munich, Germany, on 1 and 2 July 2026, brought together patient advocates, healthcare professionals, researchers, and representatives from DiCE Member Organisations. Designed to strengthen knowledge, inspire collaboration, and empower patient advocates, the annual event combined the latest scientific developments with practical discussions on improving the lives of people affected by digestive cancers.

A key focus of this year’s programme was to make cutting-edge science accessible to the patient community. Leading international experts translated the latest research presented at the ESMO Gastrointestinal Cancers Congress into clear, patient-centred insights, helping participants better understand recent advances in colorectal, pancreatic, liver, gastric, and oesophageal cancers, and what these developments could mean for patients and their families.

The Masterclass also explored one of the fastest-evolving areas in healthcare: artificial intelligence. Participants learned how AI and digital health technologies are beginning to shape cancer care, from improving diagnosis and treatment to making better use of patient-generated data. Discussions emphasised the importance of ensuring these innovations are developed responsibly and with patients actively involved in shaping their future.

Another major theme was the growing evidence supporting physical activity throughout the cancer journey. International experts and cancer survivors shared research and personal experiences demonstrating how movement can support recovery, improve quality of life, and, in some cancers, even improve survival. Their message reinforced the view that exercise should be recognised as an important component of cancer prevention, treatment, and survivorship.

The programme also showcased the remarkable work of DiCE Member Organisations across Europe. Patient advocates shared successful awareness campaigns, educational programmes, support services, and advocacy initiatives, creating valuable opportunities to exchange ideas and learn from one another. These conversations continue to strengthen collaboration across the DiCE network and help successful initiatives reach more people affected by digestive cancers.

In addition, participants received updates on DiCE’s expanding portfolio of European research and policy projects, highlighting the organisation’s commitment to ensuring that patient voices help shape research, healthcare, and policy across Europe.

The educational programme concluded with the DiCE Fun Run & Walk on 3 July, organised in partnership with Outdoor Against Cancer. The event brought together patients, healthcare professionals, researchers, carers, and supporters to put one of the Masterclass’s key messages into practice: that physical activity plays an important role in cancer prevention, treatment, and long-term wellbeing.

By bringing together science, lived experience, and advocacy, the 11th DiCE Masterclass once again demonstrated the power of collaboration. Participants returned home with new knowledge, practical ideas, and stronger connections, all of which helped advance DiCE’s mission to improve outcomes and quality of life for everyone affected by digestive cancers across Europe.
