The EASL | The Home of Hepatology Liver Cancer Summit took place in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, from 22 – 24 February. This annual meeting is organised by the European Association for Study of the Liver (EASL) to explore the latest in liver cancer care. Sessions covered topics such as new research on primary liver tumours and innovative treatment strategies.

DiCE team members were pleased to meet in person with clinicians, researchers, and patient advocate representatives, where we could discuss DiCE’s current and recent activities. We shared ideas and made plans to work together on future projects.

We attended many interesting sessions covering the prevention, screening, diagnosis, and treatment of both hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA).

Overall Highlights

One overall theme that was highlighted in many presentations was the importance of multidisciplinary care teams (MDTs). MDTs bring together different health professionals to work with each patient in making treatment decisions. Research shows that MDTs can improve patient outcomes.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) Highlights

The presentations included reports on some specific medicine trials, research on CCA cancer biology, and also an overview presentation of clinical trials. In particular, there were several presentations on the theme of targeted therapies for CCA.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) Highlights

Several interesting presentations on the most up-to-date approaches in systemic therapy and transplantation were delivered. Relevant perspectives and considerations regarding surveillance in patients at high risk of developing HCC were shared. The topic was examined from both clinical and policy viewpoints. Finally, several emerging biomarkers for the detection of HCC were discussed, which reflect the research efforts being undertaken to advance towards having much-needed blood-based screening and diagnostic tests for HCC.

Thank you very much to everyone who met with us. We look forward to the 2025 EASL Liver Cancer Summit in Paris, France.
