Samantha's story

CRC has changed my path, but not who I am. It’s taught me gratitude, resilience, and the beauty of living each day with purpose. I hope to inspire others to embrace life, advocate for their health, and find strength in the hardest moments.

Finding Strength in the Storm: My Journey with CRC
Before my cancer diagnosis, I was a busy, active mother of two, pursuing a social work degree and thriving in fitness and life. Despite early symptoms, I brushed them off, thinking they were just part of the hustle. Sadly, my concerns were overlooked by healthcare professionals, a common experience for young women.

Everything changed on Christmas Eve 2022 when my bowel perforated, leading to emergency surgery and the surprise arrival of a colostomy bag. Adjusting to life with a stoma was challenging, but I refused to let it define me. I embrace openness and encourage questions to break the stigma.

Receiving the Diagnosis: A Strange Relief
In early 2023, I was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer (CRC). While devastating, it felt validating after months of pain and dismissal. Sharing the news with loved ones was tough, but posting it on social media allowed for open conversations and overwhelming support, reminding me I wasn’t alone.

Living with CRC: Goals and New Perspectives
Being diagnosed at 29 reshaped my outlook. While my peers plan weddings, I’ve faced my mortality, learning to cherish each moment and dream despite uncertainty.

The Rollercoaster of Treatment
Treatment has been intense, with chemotherapy cycles and surgical menopause adding layers of difficulty. Yet, I’ve adapted, finding joy and maintaining an active life. I’m lucky to have responded well to treatment and credit my resilience to the love and support around me.

Strength from My Children and Community
My children’s resilience has been inspiring, helped by resources designed for kids of cancer patients. My family, friends, charities, and even strangers have formed a network of strength, proving the power of compassion and community. Support groups have been both a connection and a reminder to prioritize mental health.

Lessons Learned and Advice for Others
This journey has taught me:

  • Advocate for yourself—you know your body best.
  • Accept help without guilt; it strengthens bonds.
  • Balance living, resting, and self-care.
  • Be kind to yourself; there’s no “right” way to face cancer.
  • Focus on your unique journey, not statistics.
  • Don’t let cancer stop you from living fully.

CRC has changed my path, but not who I am. It’s taught me gratitude, resilience, and the beauty of living each day with purpose. I hope to inspire others to embrace life, advocate for their health, and find strength in the hardest moments.
